LATEST NEWS

28th December 2005

A great end to the year. The capping stones were lifted onto the wall with the aid of a "digger" and mortared in place. The stones themselves are still very wet, so will crack if frost gets to them. To prevent this happening, the wall has been covered in a roll of hessian - A timely donation from Allan Austin Ltd. On top of this we've built a "roof" with palettes and plastic to keep the rain away, but to let the stone and hessian breathe.

The capping stones have arrived, but it has been too wet to get them installed, or do any lime mortaring. The repointing of the last culvert under the canal is complete. Here we are leaving for the very last time !!

6th November 2005

With the completion of the brickwork wall alongside the towpath at the River Key Aqueduct, work parties are awaiting delivery of twenty two capping stones in a few weeks time. These are cut as trapezoids as the wall follows a shallow curve. Work is also carrying on down in the last culvert (or tunnel) under the canal, finishing off the repair of bricks that have fallen over the years. The final process is to repoint the stones on the south face of the aqueduct with lime mortar.
